If You Are Looking For The Best Art Holiday Locations

Read on for all the info

I am lucky to live in the most stunningly beautiful part of the world. So good in fact that I got together with an amazing tour company to put together an art holiday to share with all painters. Cindy the tour operator has excelled herself in putting together some amazing tours especially for us with all the emphasis on finding locations artists would enjoy sketching or painting.

We have based The Art Holiday Tours around KwaZulu Natal in South Africa as it really is a world in one province here. One morning you can be in the Drakensberg Mountains, always stunning in their beauty and sometimes they are even covered with snow. In the afternoon you could find yourself:

  • surfing our famous waves,
  • walking amongst the wildest of animals or
  • whooping it up with the Zulus in a cultural village.

There is so much to interest anyone with an artistic eye and an adventurous spirit who wants a truly memorable experience on an art holiday.

You don't need to be trekking around though.

What more could you want for your art holiday this year?

An Art Holiday in a naturally stunning location helps a bit too though!

May to October

Painters on a South African Painting Holiday will explore landscapes within game parks where you can work on your animals.
(A good time to view animals in the wild is the dry season as that is when the bush allows us to see the animals more easily)

You will however also paint seascapes along the KwaZulu Natal coastline, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formally St Lucia)and the beautiful Drakensberg. In fact the tour covers Two World Heritage Sites of Natural Beautyfor you to paint in
How many people can boast of painting the same on their painting holiday?

November and February to April

For our animals we are lucky enough to have a year round great venue. When it is too wet and overgrown to see animals easily in many game parks we are still able to find the Big 5.

Later in the tour you concentrate on the beautiful Midlands and Drakensberg Landscapes, drawing in the uKhahlamba ("barrier of spears")World Heritage site, and visiting the first art galleries in the world to see the San rock art. You will also have opportunities to paint pretty coves along the KwaZulu Natal coast.

Painting Groups are small

A typical painting tour will range from 5 to 10 artists. Each person will work at their own pace. This is intentional, and enables your tutor, Gill to spend more time with each student and assess each of your specific needs. She will spend time with everyone as they work and offer guidance and encouragement. She will also chat at other times and cover topics like;
  • The fundamentals of drawing
  • painting composition
  • use of colour in Africa and
  • perspective.

Learn to paint, or brush up those skills in a beautiful setting

Paint as much or as little as you like

A typical course starts with a group meeting where a few minutes are taken to greet everyone and discuss the general form the course will take. It is also a chance for Gill to talk with each artist (newbie or not) to discover your objectives during the course. The next day we are able to set off to the first location and the first chance to create some art.
Time will be given to explaining the differences in working outdoors in the African sunshine including, How to organise yourself and your equipment.

We aim to do almost all of our painting/sketching outside - 'in the landscape' but if the weather decides to rain or be uncomfortable we will adjourn to painting indoors. The course will go on - whatever the weather!

Evenings will allow us the opportunity to:

  • relax and listen to an artist chat about their art
  • have a slide show
  • chat about Zulu art or
  • the adventures of a game ranger
  • even a chance of a wine tasting perhaps
    - Sampling will be a very important part of this evening!

*Itinerary could change dependent on weather conditions

Get ready to have the holiday of your wildest imaginings!
